Another year, another amazing horde of mashed-up music. A load of great releases from all over the musical spectrum, and A+D even brought Bootie to London for a night! After listening to nothing but mashups for the whole of December, here’s my list of the year’s best to fit on one CD-R:

- Whip Your Hands Outta My Dream Hell Bottle [Avril Lavigne vs The Ting Tings vs Kylie Minogue vs Katy Perry vs Willow vs The Police] – Dan Mei & Marc Johnce
- With L.E.S. Kids [U2 vs MGMT vs Santigold] – Gaston
- Express This Way [Madonna vs Lady Gaga] – DJ Tripp
- You Don’t Know The Reason [Editors vs Eric Prydz vs Oasis vs Depeche Mode] – LeeDM101

A slightly more diverse field of producers than in previous years, which is nice. LeeDM101 would have swept the board if I hadn’t disallowed any of the tracks from his greatest hits collections that didn’t actually come out in 2011 (Medicine Eyes vol 1 and vol 2 are both highly recommended). Titus Jones’ Culture Shock was an extraordinary piece of work – both of his enormous multiple-car-crash-mashup epics on my list were obvious contenders for the top spot…
But I knew it the moment I first heard it back in February – We R L’Amour was the best mashup of the year in my book. Goodness knows I love tracks which throw ten different sources together and make it work, but sometimes simple is best. Add in Erasure’s amazing 80′s synth bass and even Ke$ha sounds wonderful.
As usual I’m now off to see what’s in the Best of Bootie 2011.
(Not strictly mashups, but you owe it to yourself to have a listen to 80′s action-movie-soundtrack-medleys Blood Bros: First Blood and Blood Bros: Heaven 2 Hell – cracking stuff to help your commute.)
