Once, Twice, Three Times A Lady

Tranquility is back!

I’m going to write up the procedure at some point, but right now I’m just checking that everything’s okay and my data’s intact. She gave me a couple of scares along the way, and the new midplane board is definitely noisier than the old one, but I’d rather have a slightly louder computer that works than one that doesn’t.

Phew!

Midplane Madness!

Friday, 31 December, 2004 — filed under: mac / tech

Well, I’m hugely impressed: my replacement midplane board has just arrived. I reported it late on Wednesday afternoon and the kindly support assistant quoted “five to seven working days” for delivery. Given that we’re heading into the new year and a bank holiday, I figured I’d be lucky to get it by the end of next week – particularly given my last round of waiting for Apple to deliver.

So, for it to turn up a scant 48 hours later seems nothing less than all-round fantastic. If it had arrived next week then I’d have properly documented the process with a decent(ish) digi camera, but we’ll have to settle for my phonecam.

This had better work.

Please Hold

I’m not going to live this down for a while…

I got back from a walk yesterday to find that Tranquility, my iMac G5, had shut herself down. She wouldn’t start up. That’s when the trouble started.

So Here It Is

Saturday, 25 December, 2004 — filed under: news

A very happy Christmas to all Enlightening Times readers. I don’t know who you are, where you come from or what you do, but season’s greetings to each and every one of you.

I’m spending the next few days with my family, so the internet, ah, isn’t happening for a while. Once I get back to Bretton there are quite a few projects that need wrapping up before I can even think of tinkering under notlikecalvin.com‘s bonnet. So that’s for another day…

Merry Christmas!

Phoenix From The Flames

Tuesday, 14 December, 2004 — filed under: news / phonecam / photo / tech / web

Sometime last night moblogUK, the thinking person’s phonecam site, unexpectedly went all wrong when the server containing photos started to eat itself. World-class good eggs Mat and Alfie have apparently been sweating buckets to get it back on its feet, but it looks like most if not all pics from Sept 22nd onwards have probably been lost.

This is a great shame, and I can certainly understand people being upset to have lost stuff, but I really think this is one of those times when the community aspect of the site will help everyone to pull together and get through it.

Hence my first post of this new dawn:

Woo and Yay! moblogUK! Back and better

Somewhat surprised to see this popping up on BoingBoing, too.

Still, looks like we’re back in business.

Another Goodbye

Monday, 13 December, 2004 — filed under: tv

Television dramas, with their extended runs and episodic nature, have the ability to let us emphasise with characters to an extraordinary degree. It is one of television’s strongest and harshest tricks to kill off what – to us – are surely immortal beings. Detective Huey in Due South, Tasha Yar in Star Trek: TNG, Doc Greene in ER – heck, even the destruction of Babylon 5 brought a tear to the eye.

No Worries?

Sunday, 12 December, 2004 — filed under: tech / web

I’ve just read a report over at The Register that warns of a very simple phishing trick that’s cross-browser and cross-platform. Naturally I was worried.

Woohoo!

Yesterday I had my first mince pie. We sang carols in the foyer of the Lyceum in Sheffield. There were lots of decorated trees in Leeds College of Music.

But the icing on the cake: today I saw my first Coke truck advert – so it’s officially Christmas! Yeah!

Beauty And The Beast

Sunday, 21 November, 2004 — filed under: lighting / theatre

I’m off to Edinburgh by bus and train in a couple of hours, reason being that I’m lighting Liz Lochhead’s Beauty And The Beast for Phurious Productions in East Kilbride.

So I won’t be posting anything here for a while – as always, watch my moblog. Show runs Thursday through Sunday.

Brains And Beauty

Thursday, 18 November, 2004 — filed under: mac / photo / tech / Top Girls

Okay, although I didn’t have access to a camera during the unpacking ritual (hence the phonecam shots on my moblog) I’ve now got Tranquility in something resembling a decent order, so here are a few snaps of the latest light of my life:
