Moia suffers from micropsia, a neurological condition which distorts her perception of reality. Her confused and tangled childhood is tinted with tragedy; Gavin O'Carroll's monologue follows Moia to London, where independence finally lets her trust her own eyes.
The script sets a large portion of On Wonderland in an old bathtub, and director James and I devised a surrounding of translucent shower curtain. The curtain allowed for a rapid and effective transformation of the tiny, vaulted cave that was our venue, and was quite wonderful to light through.
The play moves between 'reality' and the internal world of Moia's dreams and illusions: with only a few lighting states to play with the focus was on contrast and an ability to twist the staging in different directions.
