Lighting by notlikecalvin.com

notlikecalvin is the online portfolio of Neil E. Hobbs, a lighting designer for performance. I'm a graduate of the performance design course at Bretton Hall, University of Leeds, and at the moment I spend most of my time dashing between Edinburgh and London doing technical things for theatre and events.

I'm the Technical Director of both The Penny Dreadfuls and Kandinsky, and an Associate Artist of Nutshell Theatre Company.

notlikecalvin news should keep you up-to-date on what I'm doing right now. Or take a look at my CV if you need something theatrically technical.

By default all of my work presented here has only some rights reserved under a Creative Commons (cc) license, so images are free to use, copy and derive from - provided you share alike (there are links to the relevent photosets on Flickr if you want higher quality images to work with). However, some photographs are © copyright their respective owners, as are all the set, costume and lighting designs and other artworks that are represented here. If you do find a use for any of my work I'd love know about it, so please get in touch.

This website has been designed in accordance with web standards, using XHTML and CSS: obviously a modern browser that fully supports W3C standards will allow notlikecalvin to look as intended. If you're using Internet Explorer or a similar programme from The Olden Days you should upgrade to Firefox for your own good.

The engine for the slideshows on this site is Scott Upton's wonderful resizing, fading slideshow javascript code, which is also Creative Commons licensed. Of all the javascript slideshows in all the world, Scott's was the most elegant: thanks, Scott!

This iteration of notlikecalvin uses a fixed-width layout, and although I was aiming to make it fit an 800x600 screen that didn't prove practicable. The viewport needs to be approximately 900 pixels wide to nicely accommodate the page, but should center itself beyond that.
